16 team bracket round by round
Every round halves the field, and with 16 teams every round is full: nobody waits for a bye. 15 games in 4 rounds take the field from 16 teams to one champion.
| Round | Games | Teams left | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round of 16 | 8 | 8 | |
| Quarterfinals | 4 | 4 | |
| Semifinals | 2 | 2 | |
| Final | 1 | Champion |
Seed 1’s path to the title
Standard seeding keeps the strongest teams apart for as long as possible: two seeds can only ever meet in one round, fixed by where they sit in the bracket. Seed 1 can meet only seed 4 in the semifinals and seeds 2 and 3 in the final.
| Round | Seed 1 can face |
|---|---|
| Round of 16 | Seed 16 |
| Quarterfinals | Seed 8 or 9 |
| Semifinals | Seed 4, 5, 12 or 13 |
| Final | Seed 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 or 15 |

Time needed for 16 teams
Games in the same round can run side by side, so the number of courts or fields matters more than the number of teams. The table assumes the bracket is played one round at a time, one game per court per time slot. A 3rd place match adds one slot on a single court; with two or more courts it runs alongside the final.
| Courts | Time slots | 20-min games | 30-min games | 60-min games |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 court | 15 | 5 h | 7 h 30 min | 15 h |
| 2 courts | 8 | 2 h 40 min | 4 h | 8 h |
| 4 courts | 5 | 1 h 40 min | 2 h 30 min | 5 h |
| 8 courts | 4 | 1 h 20 min | 2 h | 4 h |
16 teams in other formats
The same 16 teams play very different numbers of games depending on the format. Single elimination is the shortest; double elimination gives every team a second chance; a round robin or a Swiss event makes sure everyone plays several games.
| Format | Games | Rounds | Games per team |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single elimination (this page) | 15 | 4 | 1–4 |
| Double elimination | 30–31 | 4 + 6 + final | 2–9 |
| Round robin | 120 | 15 | 15 |
| Swiss system | 32 | 4 | 4 |
Double elimination rounds are winners + losers bracket rounds; the range of games includes the grand final reset. Swiss uses this site’s default number of rounds for 16 teams.
16 team bracket FAQ
How do I seed a 16 team bracket?
The standard seeding order pairs seed 1 with seed 16, seed 8 with seed 9, and so on, keeping the strongest seeds apart until the later rounds. A 16 team bracket needs no byes — it's 4 rounds and 15 games total.
How many games are in a 16 team bracket?
15. Every game knocks out one team, and 15 teams have to go out before one champion is left, so a 16 team single elimination bracket always has 15 games over 4 rounds: 8 in the round of 16, 4 in the quarterfinals, 2 in the semifinals and 1 in the final. Add a 3rd place match and it is 16 games.
How does a 16 team bracket work?
List the teams from strongest to weakest: that order is the seeding. In the round of 16, 8 games are played seed against seed: 1 vs 16, 8 vs 9, 4 vs 13, 5 vs 12, 2 vs 15, 7 vs 10, 3 vs 14 and 6 vs 11. The winner of each game moves on and the loser is out. After 4 rounds only the champion is left unbeaten.
What does a 16 team bracket look like?
It has 4 columns of games, one per round, narrowing toward the final: 16, 8, 4 and 2 team lines from left to right, then one line for the champion. With standard seeding, seed 1 sits at the top and seed 2 at the bottom, so they can only meet in the final. "Print blank template" above gives you exactly this sheet.
How many games does each team play in a 16 team bracket?
At least 1, because a team is out after its first loss, and every first-round loser plays just that one game. The champion plays 4. If you want more games per team, a double elimination bracket guarantees every team 2 and a round robin gives every team 15.
Does a 16 team bracket have a consolation bracket?
Not a full one. You can add a third-place game between the two semifinal losers with "Add a 3rd place match" in the setup, which makes 16 games in total. If you want every team to keep playing after one loss, use a 16 team double elimination bracket instead: it has a losers bracket, every team plays at least 2 games, and it takes 30 or 31 games.
How many games are in a 16 team round robin?
120. In a round robin every team plays every other team once: 16 × 15 ÷ 2 = 120 games over 15 rounds, 15 for each team. That is 8 times the 15 games of a single elimination bracket, so a round robin suits a league or a long day better than a quick knockout.
How long does a 16 team tournament take?
It depends on how long a game lasts and how many courts or fields you have. Played one round at a time, a 16 team bracket needs 15 time slots on one court, 8 on two and 5 on four. At 30 minutes a game that is about 7.5 hours, 4 hours or 2.5 hours of playing time, before breaks between rounds.
