How double elimination works

In a double elimination tournament a team is out only after its second loss. Everyone starts in the winners bracket. Lose once and you drop into the losers bracket, where you keep playing; lose again and your tournament is over.

The losers bracket alternates two kinds of rounds: one where the teams already in it play each other, and one where they meet the teams that just lost in the winners bracket. This generator switches the order in which those losers drop in from round to round, which keeps early rematches to a minimum.

The winners-bracket champion and the losers-bracket champion meet in the grand final. Because the winners-bracket champion has not lost yet, many events play a bracket reset: if the losers-bracket champion wins the grand final, both teams have one loss and one more game decides the title. The reset is on by default here, and you can switch it off to make the grand final a single game.

How to make a double elimination bracket

  1. 01

    Add your teams

Type or paste 3 to 64 names, one per line, best seed first, or pick Random seeding. Top seeds get byes automatically when the count isn’t a power of two.

  2. 02

    Choose the grand final

Keep the grand final reset on for a true double elimination, or turn it off for a single deciding game. Then press Generate bracket.

  3. 03

    Enter scores and share

Tap a match to enter the score. Winners move on, losers drop into the losers bracket. Share a live link, print the bracket or put it on a TV.

How many games does a double elimination tournament have?

Every team except the champion is knocked out by its second loss, so a double elimination tournament with n teams has 2n − 2 games, or 2n − 1 when the grand final reset is played. Byes are not games and never count as a loss.

The winners bracket always has n − 1 games and the losers bracket n − 2, followed by the grand final. Losers-bracket rounds that would only hold byes are skipped, so a team count with several byes can have fewer losers rounds than a full bracket.

Each of these pages opens the generator with that many teams and shows the exact rounds, games and byes. Each one also prints a blank template.

Double elimination vs. single elimination

Single elimination is the fastest format: one loss and you are out, and n teams need only n − 1 games. It suits short events and large fields, but one bad game or an unlucky draw can send a strong team home early.

Double elimination takes about twice as many games, and every team plays at least two. In exchange, the final standings are fairer and nobody travels to an event just to play once. Pick it when you have the time and courts for it; pick single elimination when you don’t.

Need the other formats? Use the single elimination bracket maker or, if everyone should play everyone, the round robin generator.

Double elimination FAQ

What is a double elimination tournament?

A knockout format where a team is eliminated after its second loss instead of its first. Teams that lose once move from the winners bracket to the losers bracket and keep playing. The two bracket champions meet in the grand final.

How does a double elimination tournament work?

All teams start in the winners bracket. Each loser drops into the losers bracket, where losers-bracket survivors alternate between playing each other and playing the newest drop-ins from the winners bracket. The last team standing on each side meets in the grand final. This generator places every team and moves winners and losers automatically as you enter results.

How many games are in a double elimination tournament?

With n teams there are 2n − 2 games, or 2n − 1 if the grand final reset is played. For example, 8 teams play 14 games, or 15 with the reset; 16 teams play 30 or 31.

How do you run a double elimination tournament?

Seed your teams, give the top seeds byes if the team count isn’t a power of two, and start winners round 1. Play losers-bracket games as soon as both teams are known. Enter each result here and the bracket shows which games are ready next. Share the live link so teams can check when they play.

What’s the difference between double and single elimination?

In single elimination one loss knocks a team out and n teams play n − 1 games. In double elimination a team needs two losses to be out, so there are about twice as many games and every team plays at least two.

Do you need a bracket reset in the grand final?

It depends on your rules. With the reset, the losers-bracket champion has to beat the unbeaten winners-bracket champion twice, so no team is eliminated with only one loss. Without it, the grand final is a single game. The reset is on by default in this generator and you can turn it off before generating the bracket.
