6 team bracket round by round
Every round halves the field, but 6 is not a power of two, so the first round is short: only 4 teams play it, while seeds 1 and 2 wait for the semifinals. After that every round is full. 5 games in 3 rounds take the field from 6 teams to one champion.
| Round | Games | Teams left | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarterfinals | 2 | 4 | |
| Semifinals | 2 | 2 | Seeds 1 and 2 start here |
| Final | 1 | Champion |
Seed 1’s path to the title
Standard seeding keeps the strongest teams apart for as long as possible: two seeds can only ever meet in one round, fixed by where they sit in the bracket. Seed 1 can meet only seed 4 in the semifinals and seeds 2 and 3 in the final.
| Round | Seed 1 can face |
|---|---|
| Quarterfinals | Bye |
| Semifinals | Seed 4 or 5 |
| Final | Seed 2, 3 or 6 |
How the 6 team bracket works
- 01
How seeding works
Seed 1 is the top team. The bracket order keeps seed 1 and seed 2 apart until the final, so the strongest teams meet as late as possible.
- 02
Byes explained
With 6 teams the bracket needs 8 slots, so Seeds 1–2 get a bye straight into round 2 — nobody has to work that out by hand.

Time needed for 6 teams
Games in the same round can run side by side, so the number of courts or fields matters more than the number of teams. The table assumes the bracket is played one round at a time, one game per court per time slot. A 3rd place match adds one slot on a single court; with two or more courts it runs alongside the final.
| Courts | Time slots | 20-min games | 30-min games | 60-min games |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 court | 5 | 1 h 40 min | 2 h 30 min | 5 h |
| 2 courts | 3 | 1 h | 1 h 30 min | 3 h |
6 teams in other formats
The same 6 teams play very different numbers of games depending on the format. Single elimination is the shortest; double elimination gives every team a second chance; a round robin or a Swiss event makes sure everyone plays several games.
| Format | Games | Rounds | Games per team |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single elimination (this page) | 5 | 3 | 1–3 |
| Double elimination | 10–11 | 3 + 3 + final | 2–7 |
| Round robin | 15 | 5 | 5 |
| Swiss system | 9 | 3 | 3 |
Double elimination rounds are winners + losers bracket rounds; the range of games includes the grand final reset. Swiss uses this site’s default number of rounds for 6 teams.
6 team bracket FAQ
How do byes work in a 6 team bracket?
A 6 team bracket is built on an 8-slot frame, so Seeds 1 and 2 get a bye straight into the semifinals while the other 4 teams play it out in the first round. The whole bracket takes 3 rounds and 5 games.
How many games are in a 6 team bracket?
5. Every game knocks out one team, and 5 teams have to go out before one champion is left, so a 6 team single elimination bracket always has 5 games over 3 rounds: 2 in the quarterfinals, 2 in the semifinals and 1 in the final. Add a 3rd place match and it is 6 games.
How does a 6 team bracket work?
List the teams from strongest to weakest: that order is the seeding. Seeds 1 and 2 get a bye and start in the semifinals. In the quarterfinals, 2 games are played seed against seed: 4 vs 5 and 3 vs 6. The winner of each game moves on and the loser is out. After 3 rounds only the champion is left unbeaten.
Can you make a 6 team bracket with no byes?
Not in single elimination. Halving the field every round only works when the team count is a power of two (4, 8, 16, 32), and 6 is not, so 6 teams always need 2 byes; in effect, the first-round games are play-ins for 4 of the teams. Without byes, use a format where nobody drops out: a round robin (15 games, every team plays 5) or a Swiss event (3 rounds, 9 games). Pool play also works: split into two pools of 3, run a round robin in each, then seed the pool winners into a bracket.
How many games does each team play in a 6 team bracket?
At least 1, because a team is out after its first loss, and every first-round loser plays just that one game. The champion plays 3 (2 if it is one of the seeds with a bye). If you want more games per team, a double elimination bracket guarantees every team 2 and a round robin gives every team 5.
Does a 6 team bracket have a consolation bracket?
Not a full one. You can add a third-place game between the two semifinal losers with "Add a 3rd place match" in the setup, which makes 6 games in total. If you want every team to keep playing after one loss, use a 6 team double elimination bracket instead: it has a losers bracket, every team plays at least 2 games, and it takes 10 or 11 games.
How many games are in a 6 team round robin?
15. In a round robin every team plays every other team once: 6 × 5 ÷ 2 = 15 games over 5 rounds, 5 for each team. That is 3 times the 5 games of a single elimination bracket, so a round robin suits a league or a long day better than a quick knockout.
How long does a 6 team tournament take?
It depends on how long a game lasts and how many courts or fields you have. Played one round at a time, a 6 team bracket needs 5 time slots on one court and 3 on two or more. At 30 minutes a game that is about 2.5 hours or 1.5 hours of playing time, before breaks between rounds.
