How the 6 team bracket is seeded

Teams are seeded in the order you list them (or randomly, if you choose). Winners round 1 uses standard seeding, so seed 1 and seed 2 can’t meet in the winners bracket before the winners final. Losers drop into the losers bracket in an alternating order, which keeps early rematches to a minimum.

How byes work with 6 teams

6 isn’t a power of two, so the bracket is built on 8 slots and 2 teams get a bye. Seeds 1 and 2 skip winners round 1 and start in round 2. A bye is not a game and never counts as a loss.

Byes in the winners bracket also leave empty slots in the losers bracket. Rounds that would hold only byes are skipped, so the losers bracket has 3 rounds instead of 4, and nobody waits for a game that doesn’t exist.

6 teams in other formats

The same 6 teams play very different numbers of games depending on the format. Single elimination is the shortest; double elimination gives every team a second chance; a round robin or a Swiss event makes sure everyone plays several games.

Double elimination rounds are winners + losers bracket rounds; the range of games includes the grand final reset. Swiss uses this site’s default number of rounds for 6 teams.

6 team double elimination FAQ

Does a 6 team double elimination bracket need byes?

Yes. A 6 team bracket is built on 8 slots, so 2 teams get a bye: Seeds 1 and 2 skip winners round 1 and start in round 2. Only 2 games are played in the first round. A bye never counts as a loss.

How many games are in a 6 team double elimination tournament?

A 6 team double elimination bracket has 10 games, or 11 if the grand final reset is played: 5 in the winners bracket, 4 in the losers bracket, and 1 or 2 in the grand final. Every team plays at least 2 games.

How do you do a 6 team double elimination bracket?

Everyone starts in the winners bracket. Seeds 1 and 2 get a bye through winners round 1, where 2 games are played (4 vs 5 and 3 vs 6). Lose once and you drop into the losers bracket; lose twice and you are out. The winners bracket takes 3 rounds (5 games) and the losers bracket 3 rounds (4 games), with teams dropping in from the winners bracket as it goes. The winners-bracket champion then meets the losers-bracket champion in the grand final, and if the losers-bracket champion wins, a reset game decides the title.

How many games does each team play in a 6 team double elimination bracket?

At least 2, because a team is only out after its second loss. The most is 7: a team that drops into the losers bracket early and then wins every game, including the grand final and the reset. An unbeaten champion plays 4 (3 after a first-round bye).

Can you run a 6 team double elimination bracket with no byes?

Not with a standard bracket. The winners bracket halves every round, which needs a power-of-two number of slots, so 6 teams sit on 8 slots and 2 teams get a bye. The byes also leave gaps in the losers bracket, which is why it has 3 rounds instead of 4. If nobody should sit out, a round robin gives every team 5 games (15 in total).

How is a 6 team double elimination bracket seeded?

In the order you list the teams, or at random if you choose. Winners round 1 uses standard seeding: 4 vs 5 and 3 vs 6, with seeds 1 and 2 on byes. Seeds 1 and 2 sit in opposite halves, so they cannot meet in the winners bracket before the winners final. Losers drop into the losers bracket in alternating order, which keeps early rematches to a minimum.

What is the grand final reset in a 6 team double elimination?

The winners-bracket champion reaches the grand final unbeaten and the losers-bracket champion with one loss. If the losers-bracket champion wins, both teams have one loss, so a second game, the reset, decides the title. That is why a 6 team bracket has 10 games, or 11 with the reset. Turn off "Grand final reset" in the setup to make the grand final a single game.

Should 6 teams play double elimination or round robin?

Double elimination takes 10–11 games and every team plays 2 to 7, still giving everyone a second chance. A round robin gives every team the same 5 games and the fairest table, and needs 15 games over 5 rounds. With only 6 teams that is just a few games more, so a round robin is often the better choice: everybody plays everybody.
