Seed 1’s path to the title

Standard seeding keeps the strongest teams apart for as long as possible: two seeds can only ever meet in one round, fixed by where they sit in the bracket. Seed 1 can meet only seed 4 in the semifinals and seeds 2 and 3 in the final.

How the 8 team bracket works

  1. 01

    How seeding works

Seed 1 is the top team. The bracket order keeps seed 1 and seed 2 apart until the final, so the strongest teams meet as late as possible.

Time needed for 8 teams

Games in the same round can run side by side, so the number of courts or fields matters more than the number of teams. The table assumes the bracket is played one round at a time, one game per court per time slot. A 3rd place match adds one slot on a single court; with two or more courts it runs alongside the final.

8 teams in other formats

The same 8 teams play very different numbers of games depending on the format. Single elimination is the shortest; double elimination gives every team a second chance; a round robin or a Swiss event makes sure everyone plays several games.

8 team bracket FAQ

How do I seed an 8 team bracket?

Seed 1 plays seed 8, seed 4 plays seed 5, seed 2 plays seed 7 and seed 3 plays seed 6 in the first round — that standard seeding order keeps the top seeds apart until the later rounds. No byes are needed for 8 teams; it plays out in 3 rounds and 7 games.

How do you do an 8 team bracket?

List the teams from strongest to weakest: that order is the seeding. In the quarterfinals, 4 games are played seed against seed: 1 vs 8, 4 vs 5, 2 vs 7 and 3 vs 6. The winner of each game moves on and the loser is out. After 3 rounds only the champion is left unbeaten.

How many games are in an 8 team bracket?

7. Every game knocks out one team, and 7 teams have to go out before one champion is left, so an 8 team single elimination bracket always has 7 games over 3 rounds: 4 in the quarterfinals, 2 in the semifinals and 1 in the final. Add a 3rd place match and it is 8 games.

What does an 8 team bracket look like?

It has 3 columns of games, one per round, narrowing toward the final: 8, 4 and 2 team lines from left to right, then one line for the champion. With standard seeding, seed 1 sits at the top and seed 2 at the bottom, so they can only meet in the final. "Print blank template" above gives you exactly this sheet.

How many games does each team play in an 8 team bracket?

At least 1, because a team is out after its first loss, and every first-round loser plays just that one game. The champion plays 3. If you want more games per team, a double elimination bracket guarantees every team 2 and a round robin gives every team 7.

Does an 8 team bracket have a consolation bracket?

Not a full one. You can add a third-place game between the two semifinal losers with "Add a 3rd place match" in the setup, which makes 8 games in total. If you want every team to keep playing after one loss, use a 8 team double elimination bracket instead: it has a losers bracket, every team plays at least 2 games, and it takes 14 or 15 games.

How many games are in an 8 team round robin?

28. In a round robin every team plays every other team once: 8 × 7 ÷ 2 = 28 games over 7 rounds, 7 for each team. That is 4 times the 7 games of a single elimination bracket, so a round robin suits a league or a long day better than a quick knockout.

How long does an 8 team tournament take?

It depends on how long a game lasts and how many courts or fields you have. Played one round at a time, an 8 team bracket needs 7 time slots on one court, 4 on two and 3 on four. At 30 minutes a game that is about 3.5 hours, 2 hours or 1.5 hours of playing time, before breaks between rounds.
