4 team bracket round by round
Every round halves the field, and with 4 teams every round is full: nobody waits for a bye. 3 games in 2 rounds take the field from 4 teams to one champion.
| Round | Games | Teams left | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semifinals | 2 | 2 | |
| Final | 1 | Champion |
Seed 1’s path to the title
Standard seeding keeps the strongest teams apart for as long as possible: two seeds can only ever meet in one round, fixed by where they sit in the bracket. Seed 1 can meet only seed 4 in the semifinals and seeds 2 and 3 in the final.
| Round | Seed 1 can face |
|---|---|
| Semifinals | Seed 4 |
| Final | Seed 2 or 3 |
How the 4 team bracket works
- 01
How seeding works
Seed 1 is the top team. The bracket order keeps seed 1 and seed 2 apart until the final, so the strongest teams meet as late as possible.

Time needed for 4 teams
Games in the same round can run side by side, so the number of courts or fields matters more than the number of teams. The table assumes the bracket is played one round at a time, one game per court per time slot. A 3rd place match adds one slot on a single court; with two or more courts it runs alongside the final.
| Courts | Time slots | 20-min games | 30-min games | 60-min games |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 court | 3 | 1 h | 1 h 30 min | 3 h |
| 2 courts | 2 | 40 min | 1 h | 2 h |
4 teams in other formats
The same 4 teams play very different numbers of games depending on the format. Single elimination is the shortest; double elimination gives every team a second chance; a round robin or a Swiss event makes sure everyone plays several games.
| Format | Games | Rounds | Games per team |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single elimination (this page) | 3 | 2 | 1–2 |
| Double elimination | 6–7 | 2 + 2 + final | 2–5 |
| Round robin | 6 | 3 | 3 |
| Swiss system | 4 | 2 | 2 |
Double elimination rounds are winners + losers bracket rounds; the range of games includes the grand final reset. Swiss uses this site’s default number of rounds for 4 teams.
4 team bracket FAQ
How does a 4 team single elimination bracket work?
Four teams play 2 first-round games (seed 1 vs. seed 4, seed 2 vs. seed 3), then the two winners meet in the final — 2 rounds and 3 games total. No byes are needed since 4 is already a power of two.
How many games are in a 4 team bracket?
3. Every game knocks out one team, and 3 teams have to go out before one champion is left, so a 4 team single elimination bracket always has 3 games over 2 rounds: 2 in the semifinals and 1 in the final. Add a 3rd place match and it is 4 games.
Does a 4 team bracket need byes?
No. 4 is a power of two, so all 4 teams play in the first round and the field halves cleanly every round: 4 and 2 teams, then the champion. Byes only appear when the team count falls between powers of two, like 3 or 6 teams.
How many games does each team play in a 4 team bracket?
At least 1, because a team is out after its first loss, and every first-round loser plays just that one game. The champion plays 2. If you want more games per team, a double elimination bracket guarantees every team 2 and a round robin gives every team 3.
Does a 4 team bracket have a consolation bracket?
Not a full one. You can add a third-place game between the two semifinal losers with "Add a 3rd place match" in the setup, which makes 4 games in total. If you want every team to keep playing after one loss, use a 4 team double elimination bracket instead: it has a losers bracket, every team plays at least 2 games, and it takes 6 or 7 games.
How many games are in a 4 team round robin?
6. In a round robin every team plays every other team once: 4 × 3 ÷ 2 = 6 games over 3 rounds, 3 for each team. That is 2 times the 3 games of a single elimination bracket, so a round robin suits a league or a long day better than a quick knockout.
How long does a 4 team tournament take?
It depends on how long a game lasts and how many courts or fields you have. Played one round at a time, a 4 team bracket needs 3 time slots on one court and 2 on two or more. At 30 minutes a game that is about 1.5 hours or 1 hour of playing time, before breaks between rounds.
