Seed 1’s path to the title

Standard seeding keeps the strongest teams apart for as long as possible: two seeds can only ever meet in one round, fixed by where they sit in the bracket. Seed 1 can meet only seed 4 in the semifinals and seeds 2 and 3 in the final.

How the 32 team bracket works

  1. 01

    How seeding works

Seed 1 is the top team. The bracket order keeps seed 1 and seed 2 apart until the final, so the strongest teams meet as late as possible.

Time needed for 32 teams

Games in the same round can run side by side, so the number of courts or fields matters more than the number of teams. The table assumes the bracket is played one round at a time, one game per court per time slot. A 3rd place match adds one slot on a single court; with two or more courts it runs alongside the final.

32 teams in other formats

The same 32 teams play very different numbers of games depending on the format. Single elimination is the shortest; double elimination gives every team a second chance; a round robin or a Swiss event makes sure everyone plays several games.

32 team bracket FAQ

How does seeding work in a 32 team bracket?

Each first-round match pairs a seed with its mirror (33 minus that seed): 1 vs 32, 16 vs 17, and so on — every match keeps the top seeds apart until the later rounds. A 32 team bracket needs no byes — it's 5 rounds and 31 games total.

How many games are in a 32 team bracket?

31. Every game knocks out one team, and 31 teams have to go out before one champion is left, so a 32 team single elimination bracket always has 31 games over 5 rounds: 16 in the round of 32, 8 in the round of 16, 4 in the quarterfinals, 2 in the semifinals and 1 in the final. Add a 3rd place match and it is 32 games.

How does a 32 team bracket work?

List the teams from strongest to weakest: that order is the seeding. In the round of 32, 16 games are played seed against seed: 1 vs 32, 16 vs 17 and so on. The winner of each game moves on and the loser is out. After 5 rounds only the champion is left unbeaten.

How many games does each team play in a 32 team bracket?

At least 1, because a team is out after its first loss, and every first-round loser plays just that one game. The champion plays 5. If you want more games per team, a double elimination bracket guarantees every team 2 and a round robin gives every team 31.

Does a 32 team bracket have a consolation bracket?

Not a full one. You can add a third-place game between the two semifinal losers with "Add a 3rd place match" in the setup, which makes 32 games in total. If you want every team to keep playing after one loss, use a 32 team double elimination bracket instead: it has a losers bracket, every team plays at least 2 games, and it takes 62 or 63 games.

How many games are in a 32 team round robin?

496. In a round robin every team plays every other team once: 32 × 31 ÷ 2 = 496 games over 31 rounds, 31 for each team. That is 16 times the 31 games of a single elimination bracket, so a round robin suits a league or a long day better than a quick knockout.

How long does a 32 team tournament take?

It depends on how long a game lasts and how many courts or fields you have. Played one round at a time, a 32 team bracket needs 31 time slots on one court, 16 on two and 9 on four. At 30 minutes a game that is about 15.5 hours, 8 hours or 4.5 hours of playing time, before breaks between rounds.
